The College Search
Ty
I am currently in my junior year of high school and it is about the time when the college search begins. My mom took me to a college fair at a different local high school and I started to find out more about each of my possible future education sites. I also got back my SAT scores and my GPA through my high school career counselor. I wish to be an engineer though I am not set on any particular branch of study. I want to stay close to home so that I might still be able to frequently visit my parents. I still have a couple more SAT tests to take, and another year and a half to expand my potential to colleges. My parents are doing everything to help me through this process and I hope that everything works out great.

I’d like to hear from kids who have lived in a joint custody arrangement and then go off to college. What are some of the issues that arise when you go off to college? For example, if you have a short break in your schedule, is it difficult to determine whose house you visit during the break, especially if your parents don’t live near each other? What can parents do to make it easier for you?

This has to be an exciting as well as a scary time for you, Ty. I remember when I had to start making those types of decisions. It was daunting indeed. But you know what? The information I got about the colleges and college life the more comfortable I became. Also having friends to talk to who were facing the same decision gave me another resource to bounce things off of. So relax and take your time. As a junior you do have time so don’t panic. Get your college catalogs, visit the websites, and check out the info those sites have potential new students. Oh, and one more thing…believe it or not your parents are probably waiting on the sidelines ready to help you in anyway they can. Bounce some of your thoughts off of them too. You won’t be sorry. Good Luck.
